When you are ready to purchase a gold pair
of
earrings or perhaps a gold chain, you will see many stores with the
same looking item but
many different prices. What actually goes into the pricing of gold
jewelry?
First of all, the most important influence on a piece of gold jewelry
is the cost
of raw gold on the international market. Gold has a history of wild
fluctutions. For the last couple of years it was around the $350 - $400
an ounce price. However, lately it is around $635 an ounce. Keep in
mind that everyone pays the same for raw gold.
Once you factor in the cost of gold into the
article of jewelry you then have the cost to manufacture the jewelry.
Here is where there is a big difference in cost. Some manufacturers do
not put a lot of labor into their jewelry. They simply cast and polish
the jewelry. Then sell it to a retailer to sell to you. Other
manufacturers put more labor into their jewelry. They hand polish and
make sure all the loops and clasps are soldered shut. Their labor
charges are going to be higher than the manufacturer that just puts out
jewelry to the mass marketers.
So far we have the cost of gold plus the
cost to manufacturer the jewelry, now the final cost is the retail
markup. This cost flucuates by market to market. Many retailers in
small cities charge more mark up than retailers in larger cities. The
reason is competition. Internet pricing is generally the lowest because
websites are competing with other websites from around the world.
However, the drawback with buying a piece of jewelry over the internet
is you can not touch and feel the item before you purchase and if you
do buy the item and do not like the jewelry you will be responsible for
mailing it back at your cost.
